Eastern Mountain Wilderness Challenge
Event Information, Participant Requirements and Mandatory Gear Lists
EVENT INFORMATION
Registration for both the Classic and Pro Races will be open on Friday, August 9th, from 5pm to 10pm in beautiful Wanakena, NY. Otto’s Abode will remain open late and will be serving food. Some free camping in Wanakena will be available on a first-come, first served basis. Paid camping at Cranberry Lake Campground is nearby, and other local lodging options exist as well.
Registration will re-open for a brief time early on Saturday morning for last-minute arrivals (Classic racers only, Pro racers must register on Friday). Participants will be bused to the start. Two post-event meals and an awards ceremony will be held in Wanakena on Sunday. There will be no gender differentiation in the awards ceremony. Everyone is equal. Top prizes will simply go to the first place solo, and the first place team, regardless of gender or team size.
WHAT DO YOU GET?
An “unsupported” event really isn’t unsupported. GPS tracking is included with registration. Course design, maps, logistics, free camping, and transportation are all taken care of. Thousands of dollars in awards, prizes and swag give-aways are always fan favorites. So is the post-race feed, Otto’s Abode will be catering two awesome meals on Sunday: lunch for the early finishers and dinner at the awards ceremony. We heard several racers last year say that the food was the best they’ve had at any AR!
But an often overlooked benefit to doing this type of event, beyond all those things, is the added safety you get from the behind-the-scenes support. Self-rescue is always option one, of course. But with live GPS tracking included, and event staff keeping an eye on the race and ready to coordinate a response if things do go awry, you are afforded an opportunity and the peace of mind to explore a remote Adirondack wilderness that very few would otherwise dare to venture into.
For the cost of entry, this is simply one of the best bangs for your buck going in the adventure world right now.
PARTICIPANT REQUIREMENTS
Participants should recognize that this course venue is remote and extremely rugged, and will pose a significant challenge even to the most experienced adventurers. Do not underestimate the difficulty of this race. One must only view the 2022 and 2023 race results to see how many teams were unable to complete the course as official finishers. Participants should be physically fit and in good health on race day. Excellent off-trail navigation and route-finding skills are required, whether by map and compass or by GPS.
Given the difficulty of the navigation, the terrain, and the rescue challenges posed by this remote course, each solo and each team will be required to carry a satellite tracking/communication device. This will be provided by the race organization, and it is included in the cost of registration.
“DIGITAL DIVISION”
We are excited to be offering a Digital Division at this event. In this division, participants may navigate through the course using a handheld GPS unit or a GPS mapping application on a cell phone. These participants will not be ranked competitively, but this removes a huge barrier to entry for anyone who doesn’t yet possess the map-and-compass navigational prowess of a seasoned adventure racer.
Digital Division participants will not be eligible for the competitive prize pool, of course, but finishers in this division who are present at the awards ceremony will be entered to win prizes in a random drawing.
NOTE: There is no Digital Division in the Pro Race.
